“Indonesia’s Hidden Heritage – A Cultural Journey of Discovery” by Stephanie Brookes and David Metcalf Stephanie Brookes and David Metcalf launched their first book, “Indonesia’s Hidden Heritage – A Cultural Journey of Discovery” in March 2014 at the Museum National in Jakarta.
The book took twelve months to complete. Stephanie and David took off and hit the road, with the aim of discovering the hidden heritage in Indonesia. They went to places seldom visited by tourists, stayed in small traditional villages on mountaintops in Flores and Sumbawa, watched sunrises from volcanoes sitting with village elders and found themselves sharing stories with village historians in far flung parts of Java. They carefully recorded the stories, tales, myths and legends from the local people they met along the way.
“It has been an extraordinary journey of discovery and now it is our aim to bring this to the world,” said Stephanie. “I hope our book firstly, inspires local Indonesian people to get out there and discover more of their own country. Most Indonesians I meet do not travel. For ex-pats and foreigners, I hope this book will inspire you to get out a map, gaze over this sprawling mass of 17,000 islands and choose where to go on your next holiday break.” “Indonesia is an incredible country of great beauty and ethnic diversity,” said David, “ Everywhere I have ventured I have never felt unsafe travelling here. The gentleness of the people and upmost respect they bestow on foreign guests is humbling. It is my desire to keep travelling and discover more. We hope to get to The Malukus, Papua, Timor-Leste, the Togian Islands, Jambi and beyond this year”.
This 120-page book is full of David Metcalf’s dazzling and spectacular photography. David is a professional photographer residing with his wife, Stephanie in Ubud, Bali.
